The Antminer S9, specifically, was engineered to process the SHA-256 algorithm, which is fundamental to Bitcoin’s Proof-of-Work mechanism. It achieved impressive speeds, typically around 13-14 terahashes per second (TH/s), for SHA-256 computations.
Ethereum, in its Proof-of-Work phase, utilized a distinct mining algorithm called Ethash. The very nature of an ASIC means its hardware architecture is hard-coded for its designated algorithm. It is physically impossible to reconfigure or convert an Antminer S9 to process Ethash or any other algorithm. The silicon’s design dictates its function, making it incapable of performing computations outside its specific programming.
